LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
The House Judiciary Committee has approved H.R. 3736, the Visa Waiver Permanent Program. This bill would, as its name implies, make the current Visa Waiver Pilot Program permanent. The Committee approved the version previously approved by the Immigration Subcommittee, with only one difference. To qualify for the visa waiver program, a country must have had less than a three percent visa denial rate. In the version of the legislation approved by the Committee, visa denials based on race, gender, sexual orientation or disabilities cannot be included in calculating the overall denial rate. The Judiciary Committee also approved H.R. 3244, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. This bill would create a new visa category granting permanent residence to people who have been brought to the US for sex trafficking or slave labor purposes.
