IMMIGRATION PLAYS A LARGE ROLE IN MICHIGAN SENATE RACE
Alan Simpson, a former US Senator from Wyoming, has resigned from the advisory board of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). According to a statement issued by FAIR, which advocates restricted immigration, the resignation was prompted by FAIR’s advertising campaign against Senator Spencer Abraham of Michigan. Abraham, who is the chair of the Senate Immigration Subcommittee, is pro-immigration and has been instrumental in bringing the argument for increasing the immigration of skilled workers to the political forefront. FAIR’s advertisements in the Abraham campaign have met with much criticism, and have been pulled by some media outlets that feel the ads are misleading. Meanwhile, the Republican Party of Michigan has denounced Abraham’s Democratic opponent, US Representative Debbie Stabenow, for failing to publicly oppose the anti Abraham ads sponsored by FAIR. According to the Republican Party, Stabenow has been silent because one of her large campaign contributors is on the board of FAIR. Stabenow’s campaign responded that she has publicly said that FAIR’s ads are inappropriate, and that there is nothing more she can do about them. FAIR has said that the Republican Party chose to attack their opponent rather than engage in debate about the perceived need to increase the number of foreign workers in the US.
