IMMIGRANT WORKERS WHO ATTEMPTED TO UNIONIZE CONTINUE TO WAIT FOR INS RELIEF
Last year eight workers at a Holiday Inn in Minneapolis, Minnesota, were arrested for working without INS authorization. The arrests were made under suspicious circumstances – the manager called the INS only after workers voted to unionize. The workers and advocates on their behalf, who include Minnesota US Senator Paul Wellstone, hoped that this week the INS would not act to deport them. However, the INS has not made any decision on the case. Meanwhile, the workers are assisting the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in its case against the hotel. The case is being pursued under a recently announced EEOC policy prohibiting discrimination in the workplace regardless of a person’s immigration status. The workers are scheduled to have a hearing before an Immigration Judge next week, at which their status will be decided. Their attorneys are expected to seek a deferment of any action against them so that they may remain in the US while the EEOC pursues the case.
