NEW REPORT SHOWS MEXICAN BORDER CROSSINGS INCREASINGLY DANGEROUS
The California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation has released a report claiming that 37 people have died attempting to cross the Mexican border during the first three months of 2000. During the same period in 1999 only 22 people died. According to the report, the first three months of this year were the most deadly of any first quarter since the start of Operation Gatekeeper in 1994. The INS does not have statistics on the California border back to 1994, and does not break such statistics down by quarter, so it is unable to confirm or deny the report. It does say that 217 people have died along the border since 1998. Statistics from the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office revealed that 274 people died along the San Diego County border during the period from 1995 to 1999. The report prompted a march on the Mexican side of the border to call attention to the rising number of deaths. The Border Patrol is not ignoring the problems on the border, and has trained many agents in emergency medical treatment, as well as producing Spanish language public service announcements warning people that attempting to cross the border is dangerous.
