CONTINUING DEVELOPMENTS IN INS SPY CASE
Federal officials say their case against Mariano Faget, the high level INS official who was arrested in February on charges of spying for Cuba is growing stronger. Among the evidence recently submitted in court are summaries of phone conversations between Faget and two business associates about their plans to go to Cuba for a business exposition. There is also evidence that contradicts Faget’s claim that he knew nothing about an envelope in his office that contained passports and other documents about a number of aliens. Prosecutors claim these aliens were informants and intelligence agents, and that Faget was to obtain immigration benefits for them. Faget has been denied bond, and is being held in jail pending his trial, which is set to begin on May 1. While Faget’s family and friends have offered to post a million bond to secure his release, the judge found he is still a flight risk because of his connection with Pedro Font, a wealthy businessman to whom Faget passed some information about alleged Cuban defectors. Font and Faget were both associated with Jose Impratori, the Cuban diplomat who was deported over his alleged involvement in the affair.
