The national office of the Division of Foreign Labor Certification recently appointed a new chief, Dale Ziegler. Mr. Ziegler was formerly the Director of the Unemployment Insurance program in Washington State. ********* The INS is assigning an additional agent to Alabama, bringing the total number of agents in the state to two. The new position was announced following a letter sent by Jeff Sessions, a US Senator from Alabama, to INS Commissioner Doris Meissner, which called the current staffing level “unacceptable.” ********* The Justice Department has announced that it will initiate proceedings to deport an immigrant from Poland who is claimed to have lied about serving as a guard in Nazi forced labor camps. Iwan Mandycz, now 80 years old, claimed to be a farmer in Poland during World War II. Justice Department officials, however, claim he served as a guard at two forced labor camps where people were shot after they could not longer work. Because Mandycz is a naturalized US citizen, the first step in his deportation will be the revocation of his citizenship. ********* The INS Nebraska Service Center recently held a liaison meeting with representatives of NAFSA, an organization of foreign student advisors. Among the topics of discussion were the NSC’s efforts to decrease processing times. One way they are trying to do this is by using a team-oriented approach to processing backlogged cases. Rather than have a single person work on an application, people from various offices are working on different aspects of a single case. Among other topics discussed were the processing of employment authorization documents, special student relief, the H-1B visa cap, and procedures for correcting INS mistakes.
