IMMIGRATION ACTIVISTS TAKE TO THE STREETS In three different parts of the country, activists and protestors rallied to the cause of liberalizing US immigration rules. Nearly 2,000 protestors took to the streets of Washington, D.C. last week to protest against sweatshop labor conditions, immigration policies and low wages for unskilled workers. Observers noted that the crowd was comprised of an almost even mix of immigrants and native-born Americans. More than 4,000 farm workers, mostly immigrants, held a march from Desert Aire to Mattawa in Washington state last week. The march was the largest farm-worker protest ever held in Washington state. The farm workers are pushing for a blanket amnesty for illegal immigrants (see the Legislative Update article this week for more on this). The AFL-CIO, America’s largest union, is actively supporting the granting of a new amnesty program for long-term residents of the US. At the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, 2,000 people gathered to protest a variety of issues including conditions along the US-Mexico border. INS enforcement strategies have resulted in many immigrants crossing the border in remote mountain and desert areas. Several hundred people have recently died trying to enter the country. < Back | Next > Disclaimer: This newsletter is provided as a public service and not intended to establish an attorney client relationship.
