EMPLOYERS HIRING ILLEGALS LOSE OUT ON WEST VIRGINIA STATE CONTRACTS West Virginia Governor Cecil Underwood has declared that his state will no longer contract with firms that hire undocumented workers. According to Underwood, “Taxpayer dollars should not be used to conduct business with companies that operate outside the law to gain a competitive edge.” The governor ordered his state’s Division of Labor to draw up a list of offending employers that would be shared with the state’s purchasing division. The crackdown comes in the aftermath of a well-publicized raid of the construction site of a sports arena in Morgantown, the home of West Virginia University. Many of the workers picked up claimed to be earning significantly less than the legally required wage of $21.45 an hour. Labor union leaders in the state were quick to praise Underwood. < Back | Next > Disclaimer: This newsletter is provided as a public service and not intended to establish an attorney client relationship.
