CAMPAIGN 2000 Immigrant groups around the country are in a mad rush to register new Americans to vote as deadlines for the upcoming national elections near. Many hope the massive surge in naturalization filings after the onerous 1996 immigration laws passed will actually have the result of giving much greater influence to immigrant voters. Certainly the pool of potential new voters is vast. The INS recently announced that it has naturalized 1.2 million people in fiscal year 1999, more than double the year before. And the pace of naturalizations for this year has remained just as fast. *** President Clinton, Al Gore and George Bush each met this past week with Mexican President-Elect Vicente Fox. We cover the visit at greater length later in this issue. *** Interested in knowing where the major presidential candidates stand on immigration. To see Al Gore’s positions, go to http://www.algore.com/immigration/. While George Bush’s web site has issue sections on a number of topics, he does not have one for immigration. A few speeches dealing with immigration are linked, however. Go to www.georgewbush.com and do a search on the term “immigration.” Ralph Nader, the Green Party candidate, has a brief mention of immigration on his official web site. It is at http://votenader.org/issues/immigration.html. The Reform Party position differs depending on WHICH Reform Party you are searching. The Patrick Buchanan site is, not surprisingly, largely devoted to promoting his anti-immigrant positions. The site is at http://votenader.org/issues/immigration.html. The alternative Reform candidate, John Hagelin, has a web site as well at www.hagelin.org. He has very little to say about immigration except a brief mention: “I will disincentivize illegal immigration by enforcing our immigration laws, and by working to improve economic conditions in neighboring countries.” < Back | Next > Disclaimer: This newsletter is provided as a public service and not intended to establish an attorney client relationship.
