RESETTLEMENT OF CHILD REFUGEES FROM SUDAN BEGINS
State Department efforts to resettle hundreds of Sudanese boys who became refugees when war erupted in Sudan more 10 years ago are finally bringing some of the boys to the US. Commonly known as the “Lost Boys of the Sudan,” thousands of them fled their homes in the late 1980s, when many of them were under 10 years old.
The children walked from their homes in southern Sudan to Ethiopia. Some were killed by animals, and many others died in a river crossing. Those that survived were placed in a refugee camp in Kenya where they have been for the past eight years.
This week the first group of boys arrived in the Boston area, where the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services organization will resettle them. There is currently a rush to get the children resettled in the US before they turn 18. Every effort is being made to keep children who have formed strong bonds together, but in some case this will not always be possible.
