COLORADO RANCH’S USE OF H-1A WORKERS SUBJECT TO CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION
The INS has joined an investigation into allegations of worker mistreatment by a Colorado rancher. The FBI and the Labor Department were already investigating the case. According to the workers, who were in the US on H-2A visas, they were physically abused, denied food and water, and improperly denied wages. Many of the workers, who were employed as sheepherders, are from Peru. According to the Peruvian consulate in Denver, Colorado, the workers also claim that they were denied drinking water and were given only rotten meat to eat.
Officials have confirmed that criminal charges could be brought against the Peroulis and Sons ranch if the workers’ allegations are confirmed. The Department of Labor is already seeking to have the ranch barred from further use of the H-2A program and is pursuing civil penalties.
Authorities say that workers have been complaining about treatment at the Peroulis and Sons ranch for ten years. The owner of the ranch has declined to comment on the case, but his attorney says that there is no substance to the allegations.
