INVESTIGATION INTO TREATMENT OF DETAINEES AT NEW HAMPSHIRE JAIL CONTINUES

Last week we reported on the removal of all INS detainees from the Hillsborough (N.H.) County Jail following allegations that guards had engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with female detainees. The story has also attracted the attention of Attorney General Janet Reno, who has requested regular updates on the federal investigation into the allegations.

Since our last report the Hillsborough County Commission released a statement claiming the INS detainees were removed because the INS owed .2 million to the jail. INS officials said there was no money owed, and that financial reasons were not why the detainees were removed.
