ANTI-IMMIGRANT BILLBOARD IN CALIFORNIA ANGERS HISPANIC LEADERS
The California Coalition for Immigration Reform, one of the groups that spearheaded the passage of Proposition 187, has erected a billboard on an interstate highway outside of Los Angeles. The billboard reads “Welcome to California. The Illegal Immigrant State. Don’t let this happen to your state.” It also contains a phone number that people can call to comment on the sign.
Hispanic leaders have called the billboard racist, and promise that they will take steps to have it removed. California is home to an estimated 2 million undocumented immigrants, most of whom are from Mexico, but there are many who argue that without them the state’s economy would suffer, because they tend to work in jobs that have been rejected by citizens, such a janitorial and farm work.
This is the second such billboard erected by the group. The billboard company took down a sign set up in 1998 after activists called it racist and threatened to deface it. It took the group 18 months to find a property owner willing to rent them the space for the sign.
