LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
House bills –
H.R. 3585, introduced by Charles Bass (R-NH), would make the border crossing station at Pittsburg, New Hampshire, a full time land port of entry. This proposal presumably is a response to the end of the year arrests at the border in Washington and Vermont.
Senate bills –
The Senate has approved S. 1052, the Northern Mariana Islands Covenant Implementation Act. This bill would replace the island’s local immigration laws with the Immigration and Nationality Act. Lawmakers who support the bill hope that it will end the garment industry sweatshop labor practices that have become common in the territory.

State bills –
In Massachusetts, a bill that would require hospital emergency rooms to provide interpreter services has passed the House and is now under consideration by the state Senate. One of the primary motivations for the bill is the desire to relieve children of the need to act as interpreters for their parents, especially in difficult circumstances.
