EMPLOYMENT AGENCY FACES FINE AND PROBATION FOR OBSTRUCTING INS INVESTIGATION
Career Horizons, Inc., an employment agency, faces a half-million dollar fine for obstructing an INS investigation into workers it placed that were working without authorization. The investigation began after an August 1997 raid at a Cincinnati, Ohio packaging plant where 117 people were arrested for working without authorization. The workers were recruited by a Jacksonville, Florida branch of the agency. This same office apparently submitted falsified I-9 forms for these workers. The I-9 is the form that employers are required to fill out for all new employees; it confirms the employee’s eligibility to work in the US. After the 1997 raid, these falsified forms were discovered by order of a court. After the false documents were discovered, Career Horizons began to cooperate with the INS. The employment agency has pled guilty, and along with the 0,000 fine, faces five years on probation. Representatives of the company however, hope that its eventual cooperation with the government will mean a reduced sentence.
