MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO SMUGGLING WOMEN TO THE US FOR PROSTITUTION In Houston, a Thai national has pled guilty to participating in a smuggling ring that brought Thai women into the US and forced them to work as prostitutes until they paid off their $40,000 smuggling debt. Phiet The Mai admitted to two years involvement in the ring. It was based in Bangkok, Thailand, and could smuggle as many as 100 people into the US each month.
He pled guilty to conspiracy, falsifying immigration documents, transporting undocumented aliens and smuggling women for the purpose of prostitution. He could face up to five years in prison and fines up to $250,000, as well as deportation.
According to the INS, the women who were brought to the US will be given the chance to accept voluntary departure, or will be deported.
There are six other people charged in the same case.
