LEGISLATIVE UPDATE There has been little legislation introduced this week as Congress attempts to pass much needed appropriations legislation in anticipation of heading home to begin re-election campaigns. One piece of legislation that was recently introduced is S. 2787, the Violence Against Women Act of 2000. It was formally introduced by Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE), but is supported by a broad bi-partisan coalition of 49 other senators. It is designed to strengthen the provisions of the 1994 VAWA that protect battered immigrant women and children. The new law would increase the number of people protected, and would make some substantive changes to the requirements for immigration benefits. For example, moral turpitude offenses that would require a waiver of inadmissibility will not prevent a person from demonstrating good moral character if the person was battered. Also, battered immigrant women and children would be able to seek cancellation of removal and suspension of deportation with only three years continuous physical presence. < Back | Next > Disclaimer: This newsletter is provided as a public service and not intended to establish an attorney client relationship.
