REP. GUTIERREZ CALLS FOR GENERAL AMNESTY In a recent speech, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) announced his belief that it is time for the US to grant another general amnesty to undocumented immigrants. In the speech he said “I think that the six million immigrants who live in this country, that work hard every day, that sweat and sacrifice every day, that make this country a better, easier place for all of us to live in, deserve an amnesty and deserve to get their permanent status in this country.”
He promised to push legislation that would grant an amnesty. While such legislation would likely not pass at the present time, and certainly not before the November elections, there is growing support for it. Among the most important recent supporters of an amnesty is the AFL-CIO, which was instrumental in securing sanctions against employers who hire undocumented workers. Since then, the union has changed its focus and now thinks that without the opportunity to legalize their status, undocumented workers will continue to suffer discrimination and mistreatment from employers.
Gutierrez noted that it is not only skilled immigrants that have contributed to the strong US economy. The work of unskilled immigrants, many of them undocumented, has been essential in ensuring the current economic growth. < Back | Disclaimer: This newsletter is provided as a public service and not intended to establish an attorney client relationship.
