WHITE HOUSE ISSUES FISCAL YEAR 2001 REFUGEE NUMBERS
The Clinton Administration has issued information regarding the number of refugee admissions to the US for fiscal year 2001.  There will be a total of 80,000 authorized refugee admissions, allocated by region as follows:
Africa – 20,000 
East Asia – 6,000 (includes Amerasians) 
Latin American and the Caribbean – 3,000 
Near East and South Asia – 10,000 
Europe – 20,000 (including 20,000 for the former Yugoslavia and 17,000 for the former Soviet Union) 
Unallocated reserve – 4,000  
The memo also authorizes an additional 10,000 numbers for those who have been granted asylum in the US to adjust to permanent residence.  It further seeks to designate people in Cuba, Vietnam, and the former Soviet Union to as qualifying for refugee status even if they remain in their country of nationality.
