HIGH-TECH AND HISPANIC ADVOCACY GROUPS DISCUSS IMMIGRATION ISSUES During a meeting this week between high-tech industry leaders and Hispanic advocacy organizations, Rep. Calvin Dooley (D-CA) called upon representatives of high-tech industries to mend relationships with Hispanic groups that have been damaged in the H-1B fight. This issue at the center of the debate is whether to use proposed H-1B legislation as a vehicle for dealing with other immigration issues. Industry generally wants to limit the bill to H-1B visas alone, while other groups want to attach amendments that they say would restore fairness to immigration law. Dooley warned industry leaders of the harm that they could do themselves by alienating the Hispanic community.
Dooley reminded the group that they have many common interests with Hispanic groups, such as INS reform. Sources close to the meeting said that it was clear that the two sides do not oppose each other’s agendas, and even agreed that they could work together on a bill that address both side’s needs in the fall.
According to Dooley, it is doubtful that any of the proposed H-1B bills will be voted on. He said that Republicans, while seeking to avoid issues other the H-1b, are still having difficulty deciding which bill to bring to the floor. It is more likely, he said, that the H-1B issue would either come to the House through the Senate or be attached to a large appropriations bill. < Back | Next > Disclaimer: This newsletter is provided as a public service and not intended to establish an attorney client relationship.
