BORDER NEWS

Authorities detained 20 Chinese migrants on the US Virgin Islands, but about 20 others who were on the same boat eluded officials.  According to authorities, almost 350 Chinese who have entered the US through Caribbean islands have been apprehended this year.

Officials in China this week stopped a smuggling effort to sneak 82 people out of the country.  Police stopped two buses packed with the potential immigrants just outside of a port city on the northeast coast.  Authorities also recently arrested 109 people suspected of involvement in smuggling in the southern province of Fujian.

This week officials apprehended more than 30 stowaways in two separate incidents off the coast of Miami.  In one, about 20 Dominican nationals were caught after they tried to take over a freighter.  In the other, about 10 Haitians were found on board a cruise ship.  They were handed over to the INS when the ship docked in Miami.

This week authorities discovered two bodies of migrants attempting to enter the US without authorization in the Arizona desert, bringing the number that have died in the state this year to 56.  Both of the men are believed to have died of heat exhaustion.

INS officials apprehended eight undocumented immigrants as they walked off a chartered Lear jet at the Arlington, Texas Municipal Airport.  Because of the expense of chartered plane travel, officials suspect that they may have been smuggled into the US.  There have been a number of similar incidents in recent months.  Two years ago the INS office in Dallas, which is near Arlington, uncovered the largest air based smuggling ring ever found.
