INS OFFICIAL FOUND GUILTY IN ESPIONAGE TRIAL
A former INS supervisor was found guilty of four counts of violating the Espionage Act. The government claimed that he had revealed confidential information and lied about his contacts with Cuban government representatives. He will be sentenced later this summer, and faces up to ten years in prison. Faget was arrested last February after being caught in an FBI sting. While he was not charged with spying, he was found to have passed information about at least one potential Cuban defector. When questioned about it by FBI agents who had provided the information, Faget denied his actions, leading to his arrest. Throughout the trial, Faget maintained that his contacts with Cuban diplomats and businessmen were part of a plan to set up a company to do business in Cuba if the US economic embargo against the island is lifted. Faget, a 34-year veteran of the INS, was an acting deputy director of the INS office in Miami at the time of his arrest. He had security clearance that authorized him to see secret documents.
