MEXICAN ACTIVIST CREATES FUROR OVER REWARD OFFERED TO ANYONE WHO KILLS A BORDER PATROL AGENT
Early this week, a Mexican activist offered a reward of ,000 to anyone who kills a Border Patrol agent. Carlos Ibarra Perez said he is making the offer as a result of abuse suffered by Mexican migrants at the hands of Border Patrol agents and vigilante groups in the US Southwest. The move was quickly condemned by the Mexican government and the US government began an investigation into the matter. By the end of the week, Ibarra had withdrawn his offer, saying that he does not want to add to the violent atmosphere on the border. Even though it was quickly withdrawn, the offer created quite a furor, prompting investigations on both sides of the border and drawing condemnation from a wide variety of groups. Advocates for the rights of migrants have expressed dismay over the offer. They worry that it will only add to the increasing tension in the border region, where incidents of violence, not only against migrants but also against Border Patrol agents, have been rising in recent months.
