BRITISH TRUCK SMUGGLING DEATHS FOCUS ATTENTION ON INTERNATIONAL ALIEN SMUGGLING

On several occasions of the last few years we have reported on the tragic deaths of aliens being smuggled into the US in abhorrent conditions.  This week, fifty-eight of the 60 Chinese nationals packed by smugglers into an unventilated truck on board a ferry from Belgium to England suffocated to death in the heat of the truck before being discovered at the port of Dover on Sunday, June 28.  The truck, which was carrying vegetables, had its refrigeration unit turned off on what was the hottest day of the year in England, with temperatures nearing 90 degrees.

So far, five people have been arrested in connection with the tragedy, including the driver of the truck and the owner of the trucking company.  Each of those arrested was of Dutch nationality.  The trucking company was only registered five days before the attempt to enter England, making many suspicious that it was formed solely for the purpose of alien smuggling.

The details of the story demonstrate just how desperate many people are to escape their situations in their home countries.  This group, 54 men and four women, had spent four months trying to get from China to England.  There are reports that the group was detained in Belgium in April, and the Belgian government reports that it detained a group matching the basic description of the group found in Dover.
