INS STRENGTHENS EFFORTS TO PREVENT DEATHS ON SOUTHWEST BORDER This week INS Commissioner Doris Meissner and Chief of the US Border Patrol Gustavo De La Vina announced plans to improve the Border Patrol’s response to situations involving the possible loss of life on the border, as well as plans to prevent such situations entirely. The Border Safety Initiative was launched in 1998, and has already been responsible for the rescue of over 2000 migrants. However, there is still much criticism of the Border Patrol’s rescue efforts. One addition that is designed to address such criticism is the development of a training program designed to help agents rescue people caught in rapidly moving waters. Refresher courses in CPR and emergency first aid will also be offered. Agents are given instruction in these areas when in basic training. Border Safety Initiatives are also been implemented at each border station in the Southwest to ensure that safety concerns are part of each decision made. < Back | Next > Disclaimer: This newsletter is provided as a public service and not intended to establish an attorney client relationship.
