STATE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES SELECTION OF DV-2001 LOTTERY WINNERS

The State Department has registered applicants for further processing in the DV-2001 diversity visa lottery and has sent out notifications to approximately 90,000 people.  While there are only 50,000 visas available, more people are selected because of the strong probability that some of the first 50,000 selected either will not pursue their case or will fail to meet all of the qualifications for an immigrant visa under the DV program.  The visas must be issued during fiscal year 2001, between October 1, 2000 and September 30, 2001, at which point they become unavailable.

There were 11 million qualified applications this year, and only 2 million applications that were rejected, one of the lowest rates of rejection ever in the program.

Under the DV program, visas are divided among six regions of the world.  No country can receive more that seven percent of the available visas.  The primary qualification the applicant must meet is completion of high school or two years experience in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience within the past five years.  Spouses and minor children are allowed to obtain derivative status.

The following is the statistical breakdown by foreign-state chargeability of those registered for the DV-2001 program: please note that natives of the following were not eligible were not eligible to participate in DV-2001: Canada, China (except Hong Kong S.A.R.), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, the Philippines, Poland, South Korea, Taiwan, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam).
