ELIAN GONZALEZ UPDATE
According to sworn statements recently filed in court by family members, Juan Miguel Gonzalez, the father of Elian Gonzalez, wants to come to the US. In affidavits they say that on numerous occasions he expressed his desire to leave Cuba, and that he would say the same now but for the fact that he is under close supervision from the Cuban government. More about the details of the planned argument for asylum on behalf of Elian have been revealed. Elian’s lawyers argue that for years Rafael Munero, Elian’s mother’s boyfriend, was persecuted by the Cuban government. This in turn caused the government to question his mother’s loyalty. They then argue that if he is returned to Cuba, Elian will be subject to political exploitation. The Senate Judiciary Committee this week held a hearing on conditions in Cuba. While the Elian Gonzalez case was not the primary topic of discussion at the hearing, it did, of course, focus prominently in the discussion. The first federal court hearing to at which the INS decision to prevent Elian or his Miami relatives from filing an asylum claim is scheduled for next week.
