NEW INS STORAGE FACILITY OPENS
The INS has dedicated a new storage facility, known as the National Records Center (NRC), in Missouri. The facility is a 200,000 square foot office located in a cave in the western part of the state. When fully operational, 400 people will work there. The INS hopes that this new centralized facility will allow it to enhance customer service and to keep better track of its records. The agency plans to put all of its files into an electronic format and to provide each paper file with a computerized bar code. Both of these measures are designed to improve file retrieval times. Where it currently can take months for the INS to retrieve a file and send it to the proper office, it is hoped the new system will reduce this time to a day.
