INS DETENTION FACILITY CITED FOR HEALTH, SAFETY VIOLATIONS
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the agency entrusted with ensuring safe workplaces in the US, has cited the INS detention facility in Manhattan for regulatory violations. The eleven violations included failure to train employees how to use fire extinguishers, failure to maintain clear fire exits and failure to follow necessary housekeeping regulations. OSHA began its investigation of the facility following a complaint from an employee that workers were not being provided with adequate protection from exposure to tuberculosis. The INS says it addressed most of the concerns before receiving the citation, and is working with OSHA to develop remedies for the others.
