US EMBASSY WORKER PLEADS GUILTY TO EXTORTION
Rakesh Kumar Kashyap, an Indian national who was a contract employee of the INS office at the US Embassy in New Delhi, has pled guilty to extorting money from Indian nationals filing asylum claims by threatening to refuse to process their applications. A number of specific details were revealed in the plea. Kashyap admitted to forcing a woman to give him ,000 before dealing with her application. He admitted to doing the same thing in five or six other cases, and claimed that at least two other Embassy employees engaged in the same behavior. He faces up to two years in prison when he is sentenced later this spring.
