INS AGENT ON TRIAL FOR SMUGGLING DRUGS AND PEOPLE
An immigration inspector who worked at the San Ysidro port of entry has been accused of accepting bribes to allow drugs and undocumented people to enter the country. Officials say he accepted 0,000 over the course of a year to allow over 1000 pounds of marijuana and 20 people into the country. Richard Pineda had worked as an inspector since 1987. If convicted Pineda faces up to life in prison. This is the third arrest for corruption in recent months at San Ysidro, which is between San Diego and Tijuana, and is the busiest border crossing in the world. Another immigration inspector was charged with smuggling three people across the pedestrian bridge earlier this year and a third was charged with stealing and selling green cards. Officials say at least two of these were used by drug dealers to enter the US.
