INS RETURNS TO THE US MAN WHO CLAIMS HE WAS WRONGFULLY DEPORTED
Edgar Garfield Gibbons was deported to Guyana in April 1999. He claimed it was the first time in his life he had ever been outside the US. He said the INS confused him with a Guyanese immigrant who had the same name and whose birth date was only a day different from his. The government of Guyana agreed, and they have finally convinced the INS that they made a mistake. Gibbons has been returned to the US, but because officials are not sure of his identity, they are holding him in a prison in Texas until they discover who he is. One theory the government has is that he stole the identity of Edgar Garfield Gibbons, an immigrant from Guyana who lives in New Jersey, and has never been in trouble with the law. Whatever the man’s identity, he was deported after serving one year in a Texas prison for a drug offense. He says he was being sarcastic when he told INS officials he was from Guyana, and that he said it only because they would not believe his claim to citizenship.
