INS DETENTION CENTER SUPERVISOR UNDER INVESTIGATION
Michael Uzell, the director of training at the Krome Detention Center in Miami, Florida, is under investigation for corruption, and may lose his job as a result. He has been the subject of many complaints from other officers at the center, who say that he has been selling stolen cellular phones and enlisted other officers in a Ponzi scheme. Uzell has denied all charges made against him. The INS will confirm only that Uzell has received a disciplinary letter, and will not make public the basis for the proposed discipline, or the type of discipline to be imposed. Before any official action is taken, Uzell will have the opportunity to appeal. The wife of one of the officers who was instrumental in starting the investigation says the INS violated an agreement to keep his identity confidential when it gave documents relating to the investigation to Uzell. Uzell has the right to examine these documents before making an appeal, but according to the wife, her husband’s name should have been blacked out. She says her husband now fears retaliation, and plans to request a transfer to another INS facility.
