TWO EMPLOYERS ARRESTED FOR HIRING UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS
Two Mexican brothers who ran a subcontracting firm involved in building an arena in San Juan, Puerto Rico, have been arrested for their role in recruiting and hiring undocumented workers. Their role in the scheme was discovered after the INS arrested 51 workers with fraudulent documents. The INS then learned that the brothers had recruited them in Mexico, provided them with forged documents, smuggled them into California and then flew them to Puerto Rico. The brothers, who were legally authorized to work in Puerto Rico, face ten counts of document fraud and transporting and harboring illegal immigrants. If convicted they face up to 15 years in prison. It is rare for an employer to be directly involved in procuring undocumented workers. Most of the time, they rely on third parties to provide labor they may believe is not work authorized, but because they are not the direct employer they are often not held responsible.
