Juan Miguel Gonzalez, the father of Elian Gonzalez, has hired Greg Craig, a lawyer who many may remember from his role as White House counsel during the impeachment hearings last year. Thursday morning saw the long awaited first hearing in the Elian Gonzalez’ Miami family’s efforts to keep him in the country. They claim the INS has violated Elian’s rights by not allowing him to pursue an asylum claim. The government argued both that the court lacked jurisdiction to review the INS’ determination, and that the agency’s decision that only Elian’s father can speak for him on immigration matters should be allowed to stand. The judge has not yet issued a ruling.
