NEW STUDY SHOWS RACIAL DISPARITY IN IMMIGRATION CASES
According to a recent collection of reports gathered by numerous civil rights groups, a person’s racial origin plays a tremendous roles in their treatment in the criminal justice system, and that minorities in the US are prosecuted more often and sentenced more harshly than whites. Much of the report focused on criminal defendants, particularly those facing the death penalty. However, some of the report focused on deportation. According to the report, over 73 person of people deported by the INS are Mexican. INS statistics show that only half of the undocumented people in the US are Mexican. Some think this report shows that justice in the US is skewed along racial lines, while others have different explanations for the statistics. According to Todd Gaziano, a legal scholar at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, more Mexicans are deported because the same Mexicans repeatedly cross the border, so that eventually they will be apprehended.
