LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
This week the House of Representatives approved H.R. 371, a bill that would ease citizenship requirements for Hmong refugees who assisted the US during the Vietnam War. The Hmong, who are natives of Laos, were recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency to fight in covert actions Laos. The bill, which is expected to rapidly pass the Senate, will waive the English language requirement for citizenship for Hmong veterans, their spouses and children. ********* The California state assembly is getting close to approving a resolution that would call upon the federal government to create an amnesty for 850,000 people, 500,000 Haitians and Central Americans who have failed to gain asylum, and about 350,000 who were denied amnesty in 1986 because of INS mistakes. The resolution was passed by an Assembly committee this week. These efforts are in stark contrast to 1994 when Proposition 187 was passed on a new wave of anti-immigrant sentiment in the state. Proposition 187 sought to eliminate public benefits for illegal immigrants in California.
