JUSTICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATION UNCOVERS MASSIVE SMUGGLING RING
A five-month long investigation by the US Department of Justice has uncovered a large smuggling ring centered in the Chinese province of Fujian. “Project Squeeze Play,” the code name of the investigation has led to the arrest of two Canadian nationals on charges of conspiring to smuggle Chinese migrants into the US, and more arrests are expected. Two Chinese nationals have also been charged. According to unnamed sources, one of the Chinese nationals charged is a general in the Chinese army. Moreover, they claim the Chinese government sanctioned his involvement. However, neither US nor Chinese authorities would comment on this charge. The investigation closed in on the ring after a meeting between an undercover agent who was posing as a corrupt immigration officer and the two Canadians. According to documents filed in court, the Canadians offered the agent bribes in exchange for real US visas that Chinese migrants could use to enter the US. The agent went along with the scheme, and provided visas. After the visas were provided, investigators watched the way in which the migrants were smuggled into the US. The Canadians charged face up to 15 years in prison and fines of 0,000. Because there is no extradition treaty between the US and China, it is unlikely that anyone in China will ever be sentenced.
