LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Sen. Feinstein (D-CA) has introduced the Immigration Services and Infrastructure Improvement Act of 2000, which would force the INS to improve processing times and to reduce backlogs of pending applications. The bill would create a special account for infrastructure improvements that would be funded by congressional appropriations rather than increased fees. It would also require the INS to present a plan on how it will reduce backlogs and to create an annual report on the number of applications processed each year. The bill has wide bipartisan support. We will soon be linking this bill in our Advocacy Center at http://www.visalaw.com/advocacy.html. ***** Congressional leaders appear to have reached a deal on repealing Section 110 of the 1996 Immigration Act. We report on this development later in this issue as well as movement on H-1B legislation.
