SUPPORT FOR IMMIGRATION LAW REFORMS GROWS
An unlikely team has added its voice to the growing chorus of those calling for reform of US immigration laws. Two former Secretaries of Housing and Urban Development, Jack Kemp, who held the position in the Reagan administration, and Henry Cisneros, who held the position under the Clinton administration, this week announced their support of increasing immigration levels and granting amnesty to many undocumented immigrants. Kemp and Cisneros’ statement was made on behalf of numerous organizations, including Americans for Tax Reform, the National Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium, and the National Coalition for Haitian Rights, the Arab-American Institute, and the National Retail Federation. These organizations represent a variety of political and social viewpoints, from the conservative to the liberal. The statement was made in support of a recent proposal by President Clinton to raise the annual H-1B cap, to apply the same rules to Haitians, Salvadorans, Hondurans and Guatemalans as are applied to Cubans and Nicaraguans and to change the registry date to 1986.
