BORDER NEWS
Responding to the increasing numbers of migrants attempting to enter the US near Douglas, Arizona, as well as the increasing tensions and possibility of violent conflict between US ranchers and migrants, INS is stationing an additional 207 agents in the area. Forty agents have already arrived this week. ********* A chase of a truck carrying 31 migrants by California Highway Patrol officers narrowly escaped a tragic end. Most of the migrants were riding in the back of the truck, which began a high speed flight from officers with the back door of the truck open, leaving the passengers hanging on for their lives. Fortunately, no one was injured, in large part because officers stopped the pursuit after the arrival of a helicopter allowed them to follow the truck without continuing the chase. ********* A Border Patrol agent has been taken out of the field for shooting a migrant in the leg outside of San Diego. The FBI, the San Diego Police Department, the Border Patrol and the Mexican government are investigating the incident. This was the third incident involving gunfire in the San Diego area this year. Migrants and Border Patrol agents tell different stories about the incident. According to the agents, the migrants began throwing rocks at them after being told to return to Mexico, which is when the shot was fired. According to migrants who were at the scene, the man who was shot was sitting on a riverbank when an agent pushed him. The migrant motioned as if to throw something, when another agent shot him. ******** The US has announced plans to increase security along the Canadian border. Communications equipment as well as cameras will be set up along the border, according to a commencement speech given by President Clinton at the US Coast Guard Academy. The increased security measures follow the arrests last year of several Algerian nationals suspected of planning terrorist activities in the US. According to the Clinton speech, prosecutors now have evidence that they were part of a conspiracy organized by Osama bin Laden. ********* The Mexican government has followed through with its plan to hire attorneys to work on gathering evidence that Arizona ranchers are violating the civil rights of Mexican migrants by rounding them up. The Mexican government charges that ranchers often detain the migrants at gunpoint, and is also planning to pursue criminal charges.
