TRIAL BEGINS IN IMMIGRANT BRIBERY SCANDAL IN CHICAGO
Trial is about to begin in Chicago in a case involving immigrants who paid bribes to state workers to obtain commercial drivers licenses. According to prosecutors, much of this money was then transferred to the campaign fund of Illinois governor George Ryan. They estimate that he received over 0,000 this way. Ryan claims he was unaware of any such activity. Of the 31 people who were charged in connection with the bribery scandal, 26 have pled guilty. One of those who will be tried is Alex Mcleczynsky, a Polish immigrant who ran a commercial driving school. He is accused of bribing a state official to obtain licenses for his students. His attorneys claim the payments were being extorted by state employees, but prosecutors say he could not have been a victim because he kept some of the money.
