RADIO STATION BROADCASTS BORDER PATROL WHEREABOUTS
A San Antonio, Texas, radio station has begun daily broadcasts alerting listeners to where the Border Patrol is. It is considered a joke on the station’s morning program, but some do not see it that way. While the Border Patrol does not think that the alerts will make any difference in their enforcement efforts, many are concerned about what the notices say about the mindset of many people in the region.
Americans have long been fascinated with and supporting of criminals seen to have a heroic streak, such as old west outlaws, depression era bank robbers, and even the legendary Robin Hood. Some observers are worried that radio notices indicate that many people do not consider illegal immigration to be a problem, and that this viewpoint may be given credibility by the Border Patrol’s failure to officially criticize the notices.
The Border Patrol is not concerned about the notices. By the time it takes them to be broadcast, their enforcement activity has been completed and they have moved on. They do not, however, see any humor in the broadcasts.
