ANTI-IMMIGRATION GROUPS AGAIN TARGET MICHIGAN SENATOR The campaign against Spencer Abraham, the Republican Senator from Michigan who has been an important figure in passing H-1B legislation, is again facing the wrath of anti-immigration groups. Project USA, a New York-based group that is known for erecting billboards with anti-immigration messages, is planning an attack on Abraham.
The group will be driving around Michigan in a truck with a sign saying that immigration will be responsible for doubling the US population over the next 50 years. Similar signs erected by the group have been condemned as racist, and many if not most of them have been taken down. The group also plans to attack Abraham for making appeals for campaign contributions from Arab-Americans.
Abraham’s grandparents were immigrants from Lebanon, and Michigan is home to a large Arab population. During his time in Congress he has been active in supporting Arab-American concerns, including lifting the ban on travel to Lebanon. He is also one of the most pro-immigration Republicans in Congress. He has faced a tough campaign this year, and sent out letter soliciting contributions from Arab-Americans, a letter Project USA feels is wrong.
Abraham’s campaign says that Project USA is misrepresenting facts, and that their activities are not caused by any concern about population control, but are in fact motivated by the group’s antipathy to immigrants.
Abraham is involved in one of the closest Senate races. His opponent is Debbie Stabenow, who is currently in the House of Representatives. < Back | Next > Disclaimer: This newsletter is provided as a public service and not intended to establish an attorney client relationship.
