PRESIDENT CLINTON ANNOUNCES FISCAL YEAR 2001 REFUGEE ADMISSIONS This fiscal year, from October 1, 2000 to September 31, 2001, the US will accept up to 80,000 refugees. This is down from 85,000 last year, and 142,000 in 1992. The total is broken down into geographic subcategories as follows: | Africa | 20,000 | | East Asia | 6,000 | | Eastern Europe | 20,000 | | Former Soviet Union | 17,000 | | Latin America/Caribbean | 3,000 | | Near East/South Asia | 10,000 | | Unallocated | 4,000 |
The unallocated numbers can be used wherever the need arises, and numbers that are not used in one region can be used to meet the demand in another.
While in most cases a person must be outside their country of nationality to be considered a refugee, nationals of three countries are considered eligible for refugee status even from within the country. These countries are Vietnam, Cuba, and the former Soviet Union.
