MAN DEPORTED IN ERROR NOW FACES PRISON, DEPORTATION James Dean Collins, the man who was deported to Guyana last year after telling immigration officials that he was James Gibbons, an immigrant from Guyana, has been sentenced to 10 months in jail after pleading guilty to four counts of fraud.
In 1998 he was convicted on drug charges and placed in deportation proceedings. He told the Immigration Judge several stories about who he was. Officials eventually decided he was from Guyana and deported him there.
The Guyanese government knew he was not a citizen there, and requested the US to take him back. After months of being held at a police station, Collins was returned to the US where officials again began to try to figure out his true identity.
They finally determined who he was, and as it turns out, Collins is an immigrant from Jamaica. He will be deported to Jamaica after serving his prison term. < Back | Disclaimer: This newsletter is provided as a public service and not intended to establish an attorney client relationship.
