LEGISLATIVE UPDATE After the long August recess, Congress is returning to session and we should quickly learn whether any important legislation will pass this year. There are several key bills pending and there are really only a few weeks available for passage. Members of Congress will be anxious to get out of town as quickly as possible to campaign for reelection to retain their seats. Many pundits believe we’ll see a re-run of 1998 where controversial immigration bills were incorporated into “must pass” budget bills rather than voting up or down on the particular legislation. That is especially likely for the H-1B bill which has widespread support but is bogged down by a fight to include unrelated immigration proposals in the package. When there is important news on H-1B legislation, we’ll report it on our site’s H-1B Emergency Update at http://www.visalaw.com/h1bpage.html. And you can see our legislation summary chart at http://www.visalaw.com/advocacy.html. Though their viewpoint is decidedly anti-immigrant, the Federation for American Immigration Reform’s web site has considerable information on pending legislation. Go to http://www.fairus.org.
