CORRECTIONS In our August 18, 2000 newsletter we included an article about an Immigration Judge, Cary Copeland, whose marriage to an undocumented immigrant led him to temporarily step down from his position while he and his superiors determine how his marriage will affect his job. We were recently notified of a typographical error that completely changes the apparent situation. We wrote that “Because she was in a case before him, and because he did not know she was not legally present in the US at the time they were married, he will not face any punishment for the marriage.” This should have read “Because she was not in a case before him.” Of course, were she in a case before Judge Copeland, he would have known of her status. They met in a social situation completely unrelated to Copeland’s position as an Immigration Judge, and we in no way meant to suggest that there is anything inappropriate about the marriage or the circumstances behind it. We apologize for any confusion our error may have caused. < Back | Disclaimer: This newsletter is provided as a public service and not intended to establish an attorney client relationship.
