Taliban Deserters Head for the UK
In recent months, authorities in Britain have been faced with more and more stowaways on trains passing through the channel tunnel. However, as the war in Afghanistan seems to be reaching its final stages, a more chilling reality has come to face British authorities. Many of the stowaways on the trains who have been caught are claiming to be ex-Taliban fighters or Afghan army fighters. The Ministry of Defence has offered increased cooperation with the border patrol at key ports, in hopes of keeping Taliban deserters out of Britain.

Greek Prime Minister Discusses Immigration Problems
Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis met with the ministerial committee on December 5, to discuss the problem of illegal immigration. Prime Minister Simitis said that he believed the problem of illegal immigration would only intensify in coming months. Afterwards, the government announced their response to the illegal immigration problem. The Greek government proposals include, the reform of existing legislation on asylum seekers, border protection and granting of nationality. Also Greece will widen deportation agreements on existing illegal immigrants and adopt policies that are more in line with the European Union.

Canada Tightens Visa Policy
There will be tighter restrictions on visitors from eight countries to Canada. Canada has reported that visitor visas will now be mandatory for those seeking to visit Canada from Dominica, Grenada, Hungary, Kiribati, Nauru, Tuvalu, Vanuata and Zimbabwe. The move is in response to fears that Canadian passports are being sold illegally in the above listed countries. Currently there are about 140 countries whose citizens require a visa in order to gain entry to Canada.

Argentina Grants Amnesty to Wide Range of Illegal Migrants
The Argentinian government has launched a program to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants in Argentina. Employers who invoice up to 48 million pesos/year will be eligible to register illegal aliens who they employ without payment or penalty. Currently, it is estimated that there are about 4 million unregistered workers in Argentina.
