INS BREAKS UP MAJOR SMUGGLING, PROSTITUTION RING
Nineteen people were indicted in San Francisco on charges of running a smuggling and prostitution ring. The result of a two-year investigation called “Operation Night Crawler,” the indictments said that the 19 had smuggled women into the US from Asian countries and forced them into prostitution in the US. They are also alleged to have brought undocumented women from other parts of the US to work as prostitutes in California.
The investigation revealed that the ring ran brothels in at least 20 cities in the US. Investigators say that most of the brothels were based in homes in suburban areas. The women were forced to work until they paid off their smuggling debt, in some cases as much as $ 40,000.
Twelve of those indicted have been arrested, and two of those are being held without bail. If convicted on all charges, those indicted face up to 15 years in prison and fines of $ 500,000.
